Gender Based Violence Is An Violation Of Human Rights

â€Å"UNPF (2005) contends violence against women as an extreme violation of human rights which results in harm and suffering. The United Nations 1993 definition of â€Å"Gender-based Violence is, â€Å"Any act of gender-based violence that results in, or is likely to result in, physical, sexual or psychological harm or suffering to women, including threats of such acts, coercion or arbitrary deprivations of liberty, whether occurring in public or in private life† (IRIN, 2015) This issue once believed to be taboo in most communities, has aroused public and political interests with fresh information collected daily by organisations around the world (Vincent and Eveline, 2014). It is estimated by the World Health Organisation (2005) that around â€Å"15 to 17 percent of women have been abused by intimate partners†. However, due to its pervasive nature the exact number of its victims is unknown. The 1995 Beijing Platform for Women identified this pervasive yet least recognised human rights violation as an impediment against women’s participation in society, being denied of social equality, as well as proven to be a hindrance in their development. The Women are denied social equality, education, work and are treated as an economic burden within the family (UN Women, ND).
